Twenty years have passed, but grief-stricken fans still stop Lisa Chappell in the street “every few days” wanting to discuss the tragic ending of her McLeod’s Daughters character, Claire.
The dramatic episode, which aired on October 15, 2003, saw the much-loved Claire die when her ute plunged off a cliff. The scene is considered Australian TV’s most shocking death, equal with A Country Practice’s Molly (Anne Tenney) succumbing to leukemia.
“Claire’s death caused so many heightened responses. People break down, people hug you as if you’ve risen from the dead. It’s very humbling and moving,” a stunned Lisa admits to New Idea.
“And it will continue to happen because the show has been passed on to new generations. With streaming, McLeod’s is getting new audiences.
“I had no idea when we were filming the storyline, I would be sitting here discussing it with you 20 years later.”
Kind-hearted Lisa, 54, has even personally contacted upset fans to assure them she’s alive and well.
